Shillong, Aug 8: ”Amit Kumar Go Back’ was pasted on the doors of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association since last week.
This was noticed during a walk towards the Bar Association canteen, which is open to lawyers as well as outsiders.
The clients who entered the HC bar association saw the posters at least in two places.
Prolonged curiosity resulted in getting some information on the reason why the poster was pasted, a first of its kind in the history of bar associations here in the recent past.
Kumar, who is the advocate general of Meghalaya, was not available for comments.
When asked, the functionaries of the Shillong Bar Association and the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association said that a statement will be issued as and when needed
Sources said that what irked the associations is that Kumar, during the recent High Court hearing on the alleged molestation of the intern by a senior advocate, who was assaulted and paraded in the city by the HNYF members, had commented that the associations had failed to protect the interns and the women lawyers.
The associations met on Thursday ( August 6) and decided to remove the membership of the advocate general.
According to sources, a letter will be sent to the state government on Monday seeking action against the advocate general .
During the hearing on the matter on August 3, the advocate general made a verbal submission that he is part of the bar, and the bar including him has failed to protect the lady law intern. This has not happened for the first time. Even lady lawyers submitted a representation in the court.
Senior Advocate K. Paul made the submission that the
Bar Council of Meghalaya is committed to the safety and dignity
of women advocates practicing within the state as well as young
lady interns and as such, will be coming up with some mechanism to address the issue. He too sought time to place
on affidavit the steps that the Bar Council of Meghalaya has taken and intends to take to address the safety and dignity of
practicing lady advocates and young lady interns.
The court observed, “Needless to state that, in the meantime and as assured by
Mr. Paul, drop box facility will be made mandatory in all Bar
Associations as well as in the Bar Council of Meghalaya offices, at
the earliest and in any event during the course of this week, so
that the grievances pertaining to sexual harassment of women
Advocates and interns, can be addressed”.
