Shillong, Mar 4: The state government is awaiting approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to start the academic session at Shillong Government College of Engineering (SGCE) at Mawlai Kynton Massar.
Replying to a starred question during the Budget Session 2025 on Tuesday, Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma updated the House on the status of the college.
The college applied for the approval last December for two technical courses — civil engineering and electrical engineering.
Two AICTE scrutiny meetings were held on January 22 and February 4 this year. The AICTE found infrastructure deficiencies, and it asked the college to address those.
The additional director of Polytechnic and Shillong Engineering College will hold additional charge as principal of SGCE.
“(The) government has conveyed approval to place 13 existing faculty of Shillong Polytechnic who are qualified for teaching in the engineering college,” the minister said, adding that the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has approved provisional affiliation for SGCE for three years.
On Monday, Health and Family Welfare Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said the Shillong Medical College can start the first batch this academic year after the National Medical Council inspection.
