NEC Secretary Satinder Kumar Bhalla and Advisor Richard J Lalnunkima were also present.

An emotional Shullai said, “What is satisfying is that in my life, even in my last days when God will take me to himself, I will have no regrets, because all along I was sad because only Seng Khasi, the indigenous faith, did not have its own prayer hall, but today you are happy, you have got it.”

Shullai stressed that Laban stands as Meghalaya’s first cosmopolitan constituency and a model of secularism.

“I was born and brought up in this beautiful place Laban. This is the first cosmopolitan constituency established by the then British government. We have various religions, communities but our forefathers taught us to live like brothers and sisters. Even PM Narendra Modi appeals that the Constitution teaches us to love and respect secularism, not communalism. We may differ in religion, we may differ in community, but we are all given only one spirit. All living things – human beings, birds, insects, fish – are created by only one sovereign God. All holy books teach the same,” he said.

The Seng Khasi Ri-Raid Laban later felicitated Shullai with a traditional ‘Jainspong’ and mementoes for his pivotal role in making the complex a reality.
