Smuggling of horses prevented in border

Shillong, July 20: The BSF has prevented an attempt to smuggle horses from Meghalaya.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the BSF said after specific information, the troops of the 172 Bn BSF in Meghalaya rescued 9 horses that were being transported in a truck meant for smuggling to Bangladesh, on July 19 in the bordering area of East Jaintia Hills.

Personnel of a BSF mobile check post, deployed near National Highway in Sonapur, had asked the truck driver to stop. However, instead of complying with the order, the driver accelerated the vehicle and fled towards the Umkiang bordering area, the BSF said.

“The BSF promptly pursued the truck and found it parked near the petrol pump in Umkiang but the driver managed to escape. Upon searching the vehicle, the BSF team found 9 horses that were intended to be smuggled into Bangladesh. The seized horses and the truck were handed over to the local police for further legal action”, the BSF said.
