Shillong, Feb 14: The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has questioned the state government for posting some officers in the same district for more than 15 years.
HITO president Donbok Dkhar told reporters that the deputy chief minister in-charge home (police) Prestone Tynsong should clarify on the transfer and posting in the police department.
Dkhar said the organisation had filed an RTI query on September 20, 2022 but the reply on the transfer and posting of police personnel was found to be unsatisfactory. He also alleged that the RTI reply exposed the department’s intention to cover up the glaring lapses.
On the section 12 of the Meghalaya Police Act 2010, he said, “It states that the term of office of key police functionaries which includes Director General of Police, Addl Director General of Police, Law and Order, Inspectors General of Police, Range Deputy Inspectors General of Police, District Superintendents of Police, Sub-Divisional Police Officers, Circle Inspector or Officer-in-Charge of Police Station shall have a minimum tenure of two years.”
Dkhar pointed out that there are so many officials in the home department, whose postings and transfers are in violation of the Act. “There are also few officials, who are in the same post for more than 15 years by being transferred from units and to intra-units only in Shillong City and East Khasi Hills District and not to other districts.”
“Therefore, we demand the deputy chief minister to clarify on the transfer and posting of the police officials and personnel in the home (police) department. We also strongly demand that this matter be addressed to ensure transparency in the administration of services to the people of the state,” he added.
