SSA teachers to move SC against compulsory test

Shillong, Oct 6: The Meghalaya SSA School Association (MSSASA) will file a review petition against the Supreme Court’s ruling on September 1, which mandates all in-service teachers to pass the Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET) to continue in their teaching profession.

The decision was made after the Meghalaya SSA School Association (MSSASA) held a meeting at Malki Ground to discuss the matter.
President of the MSSASA,  Aristotle Rymbai, said that the decision to file a review petition against the Supreme Court’s ruling is because the decision is being applied retrospectively, not prospectively.

Rymbai said that according to the court order, all teachers must pass the Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET) within the next two years, that is, by 2027.  The exemption is for those who have  5 years left to retire from service. Teachers who wish to apply for promotion will also have to pass the TET, and this will apply to all teachers, even those who have been working for many years.
The  Association moved the Education Department to seek clarification, because in the past, the department had agreed to exempt teachers who were appointed on or before 2010 from appearing for the MTET, and the government had even issued a notification regarding this,” he said.
“It is because of this promise by the state government that many teachers themselves did not appear for the MTET in 2024, but on September 1, 2025, the Supreme Court issued this order”, he said.
The Association also met the Commissioner & Secretary of the department to seek clarification on the matter. A meeting was called on September 23, and the Minister informed them that he would have to consult with legal experts before the government could file an appeal against the court order.
