Shillong, June 7: The state government has decided to notify three areas as wild life sanctuaries.
They are a portion of Riat Khwan reserve forest adjacent to Umiam lake as a bird sanctuary, an area in the Baghmara reserve forest as pitcher plant sanctuary and extended portion of Nongkhyllem wild life sanctuary.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the State Board for Wildlife chaired by the chief minister Conrad Sangma, on Tuesday.
Forest & Environment minister James Sangma said, “The proposal was brought before the board and we have decided to notify the areas”.
The last meeting of the board was held in 2016.
Chief Wildlife Warden SM Sahai said these sanctuaries are unique and hence the decision.
