State to set up centre for climate studies at Upper Shillong

Shillong, July 6: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said the state will set up a centre for climate studies at Upper Shillong.

Speaking at the Think20 Conference titled “Nature Solves: A New Framework for Our Sustainable Future” in the city on Thursday, the chief minister said the communities of Meghalaya can pioneer the conservation based lifestyle for the world and create a new social and economic order.

The event is organised by the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency, in collaboration with the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) as the Think20 (T20) Secretariat under India’s G20 Presidency.

The chief minister said the indigenous practices shouldn’t be ignored and deplored that the aspect of tradition is missing from the Panchayati Raj and advocated Meghalaya model.

According to the chief minister, the meeting has brought diverse minds and green intellectuals to find possible sustainable blue prints for the future.

Chief Secretary DP Walang highlighted the payment for ecosystem project in Meghalaya. Launched by the chief minister  on June 13, 2022, the scheme gives benifits to thousands of farmers. The chief secratary said the government has initiated mapping of 60,000 springs.

He said scientific mining is a game changer as he spoke about green infrastructure and urban planning.

He also spoke about the crucial initiative of electric vehicle policy and water policy of the state government.

Eenam Gambhir, Joint Secretary (G20) at the Union Ministry of External Affairs, and Samir Saran, T20 Chair and President of the Observer Research Foundation, India besides the members of the multilateral and think tank community were present.
