Letters sent individually

Shillong, Feb 14: The MPCC has sent show-cause notices to the five suspended Congress MLAs to explain their position within 10 days.

A party source said on Monday that the letters were sent by the MPCC as per the direction of the AICC and they will have to reply individually.

The MLAs have already decided to stick with the MDA government whereas the AICC is annoyed as they took arbitrary decision to be part of the BJP-backed MDA.

The party wanted the MLAs to come out of the government.

NPP to examine merger

Earlier, speaking to reporters, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the NPP will have to study before taking a call if the five Congress legislators decide to merge with the ruling party.

“The merger issue is a different matter. That is something we have to study further as I said we have not reached that particular juncture yet. Right now it is purely on the basis of governance and support for the issues that are important for the state,” Sangma told reporters when asked if the NPP is ready to accept if the 5 Congress MLAs merge with the party.

Regarding the AICC’s decision to suspend the five legislators for extending support to the BJP-backed MDA government, Sangma said that he has nothing to comment as that is an issue between the AICC and the MLAs and what the party decides.

He asserted that the Congress MLAs have made it very clear that keeping in mind the larger interest of the state and overall governance, they have decided as a CLP to support the government and “that is a welcome move from our side.”

Sangma pointed out that the support was extended after seeing the positive steps taken by the MDA government on various pending issues.

“We are going through tough situations when it comes to Covid, when it comes to the border issue and there are many other issues that are pending for a very long time and finally the government is taking steps to resolve those issues and seeing these positive steps being taken, the other MLAs are motivated to work with us and support us,” he said.

According to Sangma, this is a good message to the people that the political leadership is together and would want to work together in the larger interest of the society and the state as a whole.
