Thomas Jones Day celebrated at Scottish Cemetery in Kolkata

Shillong, June 26: The Kolkata Scottish Heritage Trust, which is responsible for the restoration and preservation of Scottish Cemetery in Kolkata, celebrated Thomas Jones Day for the first time this year.

Rev. Thomas Jones, who is revered as the father of Khasi language, died in Kolkata in 1849 and was buried in the two-century-old cemetery there.

On June 22, children lit candles at Jones’s grave and paid floral tributes.

In an article, Revisiting Thomas Jones’s history in heritage Kolkata cemetery, Dr Neeta Das, who is the lead project architect in the cemetery restoration team, said she and her team would love to inform the children, who are part of a programme run by the Trust’s, about Meghalaya. “…maybe on this Thomas Jones Day itself,” she had said.
