Shillong, March 9: NPP MLA Thomas Sangma (61) was on Thursday elected as the Speaker of the 11th Assembly.
Pro tem Speaker Timothy Shira declared Thomas as the Speaker since only one nomination was filed.

Born on July 27, 1961, Thomas had served as Rajya Sabha member from 2008 when he was with the Nationalist Congress Party besides representing North Tura in the Assembly from the NPP twice.
Thomas had resigned as Rajya Sabha member before completing the term till 2014 to contest North Tura unsuccessfully in 2013 soon after the formation of NPP by PA Sangma.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, cabinet ministers, MLAs Mukul Sangma, Charles Pyngrope and other legislators congratulated the Speaker.
