Thomas Sangma moves pre-arrest bail; woman not to withdraw FIR

Shillong, June 7: The NPP legislator Thomas Sangma, who is accused of raping a woman, has moved  a pre arrest bail application before the sessions court and the case will be taken up on Tuesday by the additional district and sessions judge, in the city.

The lawyer PT Sangma, quoting the victim, said that she will not withdraw the FIR.

The lawyer of the victim said she is clarifying the matter since she was quoted in the media earlier that she may withdraw the case. “This is not true, the victim will not withdraw the FIR”, the lawyer said.

Earlier,the police had registered a case against the MLA, who is also the chief advisor to the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

The city based woman had lodged an FIR on June 1 that the MLA had raped her multiple times and assured to marry her after she became pregnant .
The case was registered under IPC sections 376 ( rape) and 506 ( criminal intimidation).

The  chairperson of the Assembly Committee for Empowerment of Women, Ampareen Lyngdoh had urged the Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh  to remove the legislator from different Assembly committees.

During a virtual meeting held on Monday , the committee was told by the police that the investigation into the matter is on right track.

The Speaker is yet to take any decision regarding the letter of Ampareen for the removal of Sangma from two Assembly panels.
