Time to break free from the ‘frog in the well’ mindset in Meghalaya

Editor,

The Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has opposed the state’s investment initiatives. But their stance, while understandable from a preservationist viewpoint, falls short of acknowledging the broader realities that Meghalaya and its people face in the modern world.

It is essential to safeguard indigenous lands and traditions. However, it is critical to step out of the comfort zone of a ‘frog in the well’ mentality that often inhibits progress and development.

Meghalaya cannot afford to remain in isolation when the world evolves. For decades, the state has been dependent on doles from the Centre. This dependency is not sustainable. Continuing to rely solely on external financial assistance hinders local economic growth. A proactive approach towards self-sufficiency — such as land banks and investment-focused policies — can provide the much-needed push for economic independence. The state must embrace progress and modernity without losing sight of its rich cultural heritage.

The concerns raised by HNLC regarding land rights and traditional management systems are valid. But it is important to recognise that change is inevitable. The solution is to ensure that development is carried out in a way that respects and integrates indigenous governance.

A balanced approach where the benefits of development are equitably distributed, and where the autonomy of tribal communities is upheld, will contribute to the region’s long-term prosperity.

To continue to reject development opportunities under the guise of preserving tradition risks relegating the region to perpetual stagnation. We cannot afford to be mired in outdated ideologies and practices.

The rest of the country and the world are moving ahead. Meghalaya too must evolve to keep pace, securing a prosperous future for its people. We must ask ourselves: can we afford to keep turning down opportunities for growth while relying on handouts, or will we take the bold step to shape our future with foresight, innovation, and responsible development?

Yours etc.

A citizen for development
