Tribute to pastor PBM Basaiawmoit

Shillong, Feb 9: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has extended condolences to the family and loved ones of Rev P B M Basaiawmoit(71), who passed away around 2.30 am on Wednesday.

His funeral will be held on February 11 at the Mawpat Presbyterian Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter.

“A scholar, author and a valued mentor, pastor Basaiawmoit made rich contributions to society. May his soul rest in eternal peace”, Conrad said in his tweet.

The Meghalaya People’s Committee on Aadhaar also consoled his death.

In a statement, the committee said it met last December on account of the electoral laws amendment 2021.
The committee registered its strong protest against the linking of Aadhaar number with voter ID. The committee had also entrusted Basaiawmoit to write a letter to the President of India not to give assent to the Electoral Reforms Bill 2021 and the petition was sent onĀ  December 22 last.

Basaiawmoit, who blended church activities with social & environment issues was vocal against uranium mining, AFSPA and other anti-people agendas.

He held various positions heading social organisations and church bodies.

He had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha polls on HSPDP ticket in 2009 and yet again in 2014 supported by some of the regional parties.
