Trinamool slams BJP for country’s low development ranking

Shillong, May 30: The opposition All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) on Monday took a dig at the BJP-led NDA government for the deteriorating development indices in the last eight years.

In a statement, the AITC Meghalaya said in the eight years of Narendra Modi’s government, the country’s rank in several global indices has slipped.

AITC Meghalaya tweeted, “INDIA slipped to 53rd position in the latest Democracy Index. INDIA ranks 101 out of 116 in the World Hunger Index. INDIA ranks 136 out of 150 on the World Happiness Index. PM @narendramodi, thanks to you, India is grabbing headlines for the wrong reasons #8YearsOfShame.”

The tweet was widely shared and circulated in the state digital landscape under the hashtag ‘8YearsOfShame’.

“Economists and political pundits have stated that even prior to the pandemic, demonetization, the implementation of GST, and the problem of bad loans had begun to impede India’s economic growth. The economy is also widely impacted by the rise of communalisation and its continuous effect on small-scale businesses and traders,” the party said.

The opposition party further said the poll-bound state of Meghalaya, led by Conrad Sangma under the MDA alliance which the BJP is part of, “is being cornered over a series of allegations, scams and corruption”.

“It will not be tough for a layman to comprehend the similar pattern that the primary engine (BJP) and secondary engine (MDA) had followed in taking the country and Meghalaya down on all the significant governance indices and global democracy practices,” it said.

“AITC, as a responsible opposition, is continuing to expose the misrule, irregularities and malfunctioning of the double-engine government present in different states of the country. AITC will never stop voicing against the authoritarian forces and pledged to safeguard the rights and values of each and every individual of this country,” it added.
