Tura bypass project to ensure border security

Shillong, June 15: Tura bypass project worth over Rs 951 crore will have alternative connectivity to Dalu in Bangladesh border.

The move by the Centre is aimed at improving border areas of the state considering the current adverse situation in Bangladesh.

Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari announced on Sunday that the Centre has sanctioned Rs 951.27 crore for the construction of the Tura bypass, extending from NH-127B to NH-217, built to a 2-lane configuration with paved shoulders. The project, spanning 29.03 kilometres in the Tura district, is of significant strategic value, he said.

NH-217 (formerly NH-51) serves as the principal artery linking Guwahati to Dalu, which lies at the international border with Bangladesh and functions as an inland customs check-post.

The proposed bypass will commence near Sanchonggre village on NH-127B and terminate at Jenggitchakgre village on NH-217. It is designed to circumvent the current alignment of NH-217, which traverses the densely developed and heavily congested urban core of Tura town, where narrow road widths and substantial traffic volumes impede mobility.
