Tura MDC moves Assam CM, DGP on Chenga Benga mela gangrape incident

Shillong, Apr 25: Tura MDC Bernard Marak said Assam Chief Minister’s Office, Assam DGP and DGP, Grievance Cell have responded to the letter written to them on the Chenga Benga mela gangrape incident.

“The miscreants who committed the crime are suspected to be residents of Salmara District who came to the mela with ill intention and  targeted young tribal girls. There were more incidents that took place at different places in Garo Hills which are surfacing slowly as the tribal population in the border areas has been taken advantage by organised gangs due to lack of security”,he said.

Meghalaya Police have arrested some of the culprits and the hunt is on for others who are supposedly taking shelter in Assam and beyond. Therefore, a letter was written to the Chief Minister of Assam who responded immediately. “The initiative taken by Assam CM and the Assam Police department is appreciated. There seems to be an organised crime taking place at the borders which are mostly unreported. Victims of such crime should come forward without fear and report to the nearest police stations so that justice can be served”, he added.
