Shillong, Aug 3: Two cases were registered by the police in Ri Bhoi in connection with the suspicious death of a youth.
The police are following up the case after a video of assault of the youth (in picture) by a group surfaced.
It was reported that the affected youth committed suicide.
Ri Bhoi SP Jagpal Sing Dhanoa said it was learnt that Khraw Boklang Sten (28) son of Diesgracia Sten, a resident of Nongrah Umroi, was found hanging in his room by the mother of the deceased on July 29 at 4.30 am. The body was untied and kept on the ground by the relatives of the deceased prior to the arrival of the police. Inquest was held over the body and found ligature marks on the left side of the neck. Other external injuries were not found. All legal formalities were observed and all available witnesses were duly examined. Also, the relatives of the deceased were informed about the merits of post mortem examination but since they suspected no foul play and did not want to either proceed with any legal case or for the cadaver to be forwarded for post mortem examination, they submitted a petition for post mortem exemption to the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Nongpoh.
Following this, an unnatural death case was registered by the police.
Later, it was confirmed that the deceased was among the group of people who were engaged in a fight which was between Iew Umroi youths from Umroi residing near old market and those from Umeit village on July 28 evening at Umroi airport near tourist parking place. The police visited the place but before they arrived, the group had already dispersed. One of the Seng Samla members found them while the fight was on and he scolded them and dispersed the crowd. The youth who had committed suicide was from Nongrah Umroi and was found to be normal by his parents and late that night he had his food and consumed alcohol but around 4.30 am the next day, he committed suicide.
Police did not find any visible external injury on the body except ligature marks on his neck.
Following this, police registered a suo motu case.
As the suicide was after the assault incident, police are looking into all angles including abetment to suicide.
Police also recorded the statements of the brother of the deceased and others to know whether the deceased was the victim of assault.
