Shillong, June 3: Two convicts, who had escaped from Nongpoh jail were arrested.
According to police, one convict- Sunil Das (M/29), S/o (L) Jagdish Das, R/o College Road, Dudhnoi, PS – Dudhnoi, District – Goalpara, Assam, who escaped from Civil Hospital, Nongpoh on November 15, 2024 was arrested by Ri-Bhoi Police with the assistance from North Garo Hills police on May 29. He was convicted for the first time in Nongpoh PS Case No. 48(03)2022 u/s 224 IPC and completed his sentence in April 2023. He was again convicted in Nongpoh Women PS Case No. 07(12)2018 u/s 5(l)(m)(n)/6 of POCSO Act and was sentenced with rigorous imprisonment for Life. He was in judicial custody in this case at the time of escape.
Again on June 3, another UTP namely Pappu Chettri @ Robert Chettri (M/32), S/o Prakash Chettri, R/o Mawsyntai Village, PO – Nongpoh, District – Ri-Bhoi, Meghalaya, who was allegedly involved in Nongpoh Women PS Case No. 59(10)2019 u/s 341/363/376(2)(I) IPC and escaped from Nongpoh Civil Hospital on November 15, 2024 has been arrested with the help of North Garo Hills Police.
Both these persons escaped together on 15.11.2024 and were hiding in Goalpara district of Assam with fake identities.
Sunil Das has already been sent to jail and Pappu Chhetri will be sent to jail tomorrow as a Ri-Bhoi police team is on the way from Goalpara to produce him in Nongpoh court tomorrow.
