Two held for bank robbery, weapon recovered     

Shillong, Sept 22: Police arrested two persons for robbing cash from Meghalaya Rural Bank (MRB) at Ksehbilat, Laitkor.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger said on Wednesday that the accused, Heavy Jones Kurkalang (25) and Shiningstar Wahlang (23) were arrested during a raid conducted on Tuesday night.

Police said the armed robbery had taken place at the bank on September 16.

Two masked men entered the bank at about 5.15 pm-5.30 pm when only a lady branch manager was present.

They locked the bank from inside and forced her to open the strong room.

Police said the branch manager was courageous and her presence of mind resulted in the duo failing to open the safe but the robbers took away Rs 10,000 from the branch manager and the DVR of the CCTV to prevent detection.

Later, a complaint was lodged by the MRB regional manager on September 17 following which a case was registered.

Nongtnger said the officer in-charge, Madanrting police station and the investigation officer SI S. Kharbuli  worked hard and a raid was conducted in the house of one of the suspects at Pomlakrai, Mawtharia.

In the raid, Kurkalang was arrested after admitting to the crime and the weapon he used for the robbery was recovered from under his mattress.

Later, his accomplice, Shiningstar Wahlang was arrested from Wahkdait, Dong Pata, Madanrting Block-G and the DVR which was taken away, was also recovered from a pond at Wahsnait.

The duo will be interrogated further to ascertain their involvement in other criminal cases.
