Shillong, Sept 26:The UDP MLAs, who joined the BJP, submitted a letter to Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma seeking his approval.
In the absence of Speaker, Assembly Advisor Andrew Simons received the letter, which was submitted by Cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai as leader of BJP legislative party.
According to the BJP, eight UDP MLAs passed a merger resolution on September 21.
The resolution was intimated to the BJP, and the party accepted the merger on September 23.
The merger is as per para 4(2) of the tenth schedule to the constitution.
The party intimated the merger resolution to the Speaker on Friday (Sept 25).
When asked, the Assembly advisor said the letter of merger will be examined by the Speaker before approving it.
Ever since the political development, the UDP has been maintaining that the party has not merged with the BJP.
Later, speaking to reporters, cabinet minister Lahkmen downplayed demand for ministerial berths by saying community issues are bigger than positions.
