Shillong, Mar 3: Power Minister AT Mondal said on Monday the issue related to the Umiam land leased to the Maitshaphrang Tourism Promotion Group (MTPG) was “amicably resolved”.
The minister was replying to a zero-hour notice moved by VPP North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum during the Budget Session 2025.
Mondal said MeECL owns the Lumpongdeng Island at Umiam Lake which measures about 40.72 acres.
An acre of this island was leased out to MTPG for 10 years, with effect from February 7, 1997, up to February 6, 2007. The annual rent was Rs 10,000 with an enhancement of 5% a year.
The MeECL needed the land and wrote to the MTPG chairman last November informing that the lease would not be extended.
“The MTPG chairman on January 15, 2025, requested MeECL to extend the deadline to enable them to pursue the matter with the authorities concerned. The same has been entertained and extended up to February 15, 2025,” informed Mondal.
