Shillong, Sept 23: The officials of Urban affairs department highlighted various options, including a suggestion to make parking space mandatory for those who purchase cars like in Mizoram, Sikkim and Shimla.Cars can be bought provided the individuals have parking space.
The issue of traffic congestion in the city was discussed by the Meghalaya State Planning Board, on Monday.
Chairman of the planning board, Metbah Lyngdoh said many suggestions emerged during the meeting like deployment of traffic personnel and widening of roads.
The data from STEM showed that demand for seats has gone up.
John F Kharshiing, co-chairman MSPB, stressed the need of adjusting school timing and office timing with flexible working hours, introduction of congestion charge zone fees during peak hours, creation of low emission zones and incentives for those who meet emission standards, introduction of smart traffic real time management using AI and GPS to optimise traffic with intelligent transport system, development of satellite towns, use of e-bikes and exploring bicycle lanes with the help of the city Dorbars.
