Vice president lays base for Shillong-Dawki road

Shillong, Oct 4: Vice president M Venkaiah Naidu virtually laid the foundation stone of Shillong-Dawki road project on Monday.

The 64. 21 km road  will be upgraded with Rs  1606 crore .

The project aims at improvement and widening of two/four lane of NH- 40 from Rilbong point to Dawki.

The vice president said connectivity through road is the lifeline of modern economy.

He said there should be transparency and accountability in the execution of the road project. While people should know materials used for the road project , those who execute the project should be made accountable, he added.

Governor Satya Pal Malik said the Shillong-Dawki road will pass through a number of towns. It will open international trade and bring in over all growth of people of Meghalaya.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the road will be a game changer for the entire Northeast.

He said during the pre- independence period, Northeast had high per capita income due to better trade between the Northeast and the Bangladesh.  Later, there has been large scale reduction in the economic and trade activities.

He said the project will connect Bangladesh to boost economic activity. In less than 10 hours, one can reach Chittagong port from Guwahati, he said.

‘It will create livelihood interns of tourism besides trade”, he added.

Earlier, in a recorded message, union minister of transport and highways Nitin Gadkari informed about a serries of projects for  East Khasi Hills, Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills.
