Victim’s friend held for murder in EKH village

Shillong, July 5: Acquaintance of a villager was arrested for killing the latter and throwing the body in a gorge (in picture) in East Khasi Hills.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the East Khasi Hills SP Sylvester Nongtynger said the acquaintance, Weles Umsong (32) was arrested for killing his 40-year-old friend identified as Snor Kharkongor from Rasong village.

Police have not disclosed the motive.

Earlier, the body of Kharkongor was found in the gorge at a place called Mawriwar East, Pyngkya village on June 13.

Following this, a team led by Sub Inspector Elias R Marak of Madanrting police station was dispatched to the area and his highly decomposed body was recovered on July 14 morning.

After inquest and postmortem, an unnatural death case was registered on June 20.

However, on June 22, an FIR was filed by family members of Kharkongor stating that the diseased is suspected to be murdered.

Later, police registered a case and the investigation team zeroed in on the accused.

He was hiding at Nongwar, under Sohra Sub Division and from his possession, the mobile phone of the victim was recovered.

The accused, who admitted to the crime, told the investigation team that he strangulated the victim and dumped the body in the gorge.
