Shillong, May 24: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has opposed the imposition of section 144 CrPC on the counting day on June 4.
In a letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner, who is also the returning officer, Ricky AJ Syngkon, General Secretary, Voice of the People Party, said on Friday that the Voice of the People Party vehemently opposes such an order which is undemocratic and against the spirit of participation in the electoral process of the country.
“This order reveals not only the weakness and ineptitude of the District Administration and the Government as a whole but also implies authoritarianism and depriving the people of the right to participate in the democratic process. In the light of the above, we strongly urge, on behalf of the people, to withdraw the illogical, arbitrary and dictatorial order to avoid confrontation between the administration and the people”, he said.
The returning officer had on Thursday said all the political parties had agreed to the restriction during a meeting with him.
VPP representative was also present in the meeting.
