Water scarcity prompts Ampareen & Rapsang to meet CS
Shillong, Oct 13: The East Shillong and West Shillong MLAs, Ampareen Lyngdoh and Mohendro Rapsang met the Chief Secretary DP Wahlang on Thursday to address the water crisis faced by the residents.
After the meeting, the government has agreed to take steps to ensure water supply.
Ampareen said the reason behind the water crisis was due to the fluctuation and tripping of power lines leading to insufficient power being pumped to Mawphlang which is the main generator of water supply.
“That has been sorted out. We have been given an assurance that the power supply to Mawphlang will remain uninterrupted by adopting various methods which are very technical in nature,” she said, adding that people are spending a lot of money to augment water supply to their homes.
“Even an MLA like me has just in the last 15 days paid 12,000 rupees for water in my own home so you can imagine how it impacts the common man. Therefore, I am looking forward to this problem being resolved quickly,” she said.
She expressed concern over the delay in commissioning Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) Phase-III and said the matter was also discussed in the meeting.
The MLA said the government assured to provide the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) with five additional water tankers during the crisis periods.
“I hope the entire exercise will ensure the problem is resolved positively. We are very concerned as we had so much rain but no water coming to our taps. I am also concerned as citizens are becoming frustrated and restless,” she said, adding that the matter will be reviewed in about two-three weeks.
