Why Davis was removed as East Khasi Hills SP while dealing with a high profile case, asks Mukul

Shillong, June 9: While the state  government, the bureaucracy and the police are euphoric about the arrest of the accused in Indore couple case, the  Opposition Leader Mukul Sangma appreciated the Meghalaya police but asked the NPP-led government and its various machineries to show the same seriousness in dealing with plenty of pending criminal cases in the state.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Mukul alleged political interference in many criminal cases thereby denying justice.

Why was Davis who was the SP of East Khasi Hills removed while dealing with a high profile case?, Mukul asked.

He was referring to the call centre scam allegedly involving SS Net Com.

Davis Marak was the SP then.

Mukul also pointed out about illegal coal mining in the state and wanted to know what actions are being taken against those involved as the SPs and the Deputy Commissioners were responsible for the lapses.

In an illegal coal transportation case , mystery still remains regarding the death of sub-inspector Pearlystone Joshua Marbaniang at Patharkhmah, Ri-Bhoi district in January 2015.

Though the report of Special Investigation Team monitored by East Khasi Hills police cited it as a suicide case, questions were raised regarding the manner in which gun shots were fired.

Mukul also wanted to know what help the government has provided to activists Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma, who were the victims of violence perpetrated by coal mafia.

Other cases

The High Court of Meghalaya had criticised  East Khasi Hills police team in 2018 for accusing the uncle for murdering his five-year-old nephew and dumping latter’s body in Laitkor in November, 2011.

What annoyed the high court was that the actual culprit was not arrested whereas the uncle was named as the accused

At that time, political interference was alleged in the transfer and posting of police officials probing the case.

The high court had observed in 2018 that the Trial Court was swayed by sentiments and in the process has not appreciated the evidence properly.
The court had observed that ‘the mystery could have been unfolded in case the investigating officer including police team without jumping to the conclusion for unwarranted publicity would have reached to the actual criminal that would have been a big solace to the bleeding parents’.

Who killed former DGP’s maid?

Mystery continues even after 18 years as to who actually killed 26-year-old  Rinehskham Kharsahnoh who was found dead in the ancestral house of former DGP WR Marbaniang at Nongthymmai on March 7, 2007.

Several inquiries were initiated and charge sheets filed but the case is still at the trial stage.
