Will not practise nepotism: Deborah on Silman’s ticket miss

Williamnagar, Jan 30: Former deputy chief minister and Congress’s candidate from Williamnagar Deborah Marak on Monday said she would never practise nepotism for the greater good of the party.

Deborah was reacting to denial of ticket to Silman Sangma, son of SC Marak, the former chief minister and Deborah’s uncle, for Resubelpara. Silman has alleged that Deborah ignored both his and his father’s plea for ticket.

“The Block Congress Committee will decide. The district committee will decide. Why should I do the same thing that Mukul Sangma and Conrad Sangma do,” she added.

Deborah also pointed out that Silman’s performance as MDC was not up to the mark.

A section of the youth Congress members has also alleged that neither Deborah nor the state unit of the party consulted with them before giving tickets to many others, including Billykid Sangma and Saleng Sangma for North Tura and Gambegre, respectively.

When asked about this, Deborah said the decision on tickets is taken by the high command.

“Why wouldn’t the party consider the candidatures of Billykid and Saleng when they are winning candidates? However, it is the high command who decides on this. And MPYCC is at the state level, not at the district or block level,” she added.

While the Congress’s fight is against NPP (sitting MLA Marcus Marak) in Williamnagar, it is seeing a triangular fight with TMC and NPP in Songsak.
