Woman moves DGP over demand notes by HNLC

Shillong, Nov 3: A woman moved the DGP Idashisha Nongrang to take action against HNLC members for demanding money.
In a letter to the DGP on October 28, the  indigenous woman, who has been residing in the city for the past 16 years, said that demand for money was made for couple of years.
She said the threatening notes served through either WhatsApp, email, and sometimes by hand by one individual named Synshar  Khymdeit, usually reach their inbox, their  home and shop by the end of every quarter year, and by the first week of the next month, the same person (S.Khymdeit) would come to collect the amount on behalf of the HNLC claiming to be it’s “area collector” for East Khasi Hills.
However, there have been 2 occasions in 2019 where another “area collector” from Ri Bhoi by the name of Wallamjingsuk Barim came to collect the amount as Khymdeit was unable to come.
Till date, they paid the HNLC Rs 1,20,000 every year since the time they first started receiving the demand notes in 2018.
Khyndeit had in 2023 denied issuing demand notes in the name of HNLC.
“But after seeing Khymdeit on the news last year in 2023, my husband and I have decided to stop entertaining these notes as we felt he would be arrested and locked up in jail”.
The woman said their hopes were short-lived as the HNLC (with the support of some people) were successful in depicting him as the victim and termed the unlawful extortions as willful donations.
“Just a few days back, another demand note from Wallamjingsuk Barim reached our official business email inbox threatening us to pay the quarterly income tax or witness our family members killed and have our shop bombed and destroyed”, the letter said.
The complainant has sought the intervention of the DGP stating that they are helpless.
