Shillong, July 5: As many as 70 inmates and seven staff of Nongpoh jail tested positive for Covid-19.
As on July 5, there are 137 inmates in Nongpoh jail.
The IG (prisons) M. Kharkrang said on Monday that after the detection of positive cases, all the symptomatic patients have been admitted in the hospital. While there are 15 inmates in the hospital, 20 are in the corona care centre.
No report has been received regarding any serious cases.
While vaccination has been completed in all other prisons, the inmates at Nongpoh jail are yet to be vaccinated, Kharkrang said.
Earlier, in a meeting convened to review the Covid situation in Northeastern states in New Delhi on Saturday, the Union DoNER minister Jitendra Singh had expressed satisfaction that all the states except Meghalaya are catching up with national average in terms of decline in positivity rate. “Meghalaya is the only exception which witnessed a surge due to the corona outbreak in a jail in Ri-Bhoi”, he had said.
