Guwahati, Nov 22 (UNI): The anti-CAA movement in Assam is gaining momentum after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced repeal of three farm laws with peasant leader Akhil Gogoi giving a clarion call to all organisations to restart the agitation and be firm to repeal the act just like the farmers of the country.
Gogoi, who had played a leading role in the anti-CAA movement had already served a jail term after being charged since December 2019 in two separate cases, claimed to resume the agitation if and when required.
Talking to media persons here, Gogoi said once the CAA is implemented, there will be chances of 1.9 crore Hindu Bangladeshis coming into Assam.
The activist said the leaders and organisations leading the agitation in the state made the demand and protests weaker by various means.
“We saw how farmers fought, and the farm laws were taken back but not in the case of the CAA. The leaders weakened the agitation by various means,” he said, adding, “It is time to resume the agitation and given a chance, we will resume it in full force. The people of Assam need to stand by their demands firmly.”
Gogoi also formed a Raijor Dal which was an offshoot of the anti-CAA movement. He won the elections from Sibsagar constituency.
The recent move by the Centre to repeal three controversial farm laws following a relentless, over-a-year-long protest by farmers, has also sparked demands from several quarters, including the influential All Assam Students’ Union, to revoke the contentious Act.
