Cong to launch Bharat Jodo Yatra in city on Sept 7
Shillong, Sept 5: The AICC national spokesperson Babeeta Sharma on Monday informed about the launch of Bharat Jodo Yatra in the city on September 7.
Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhawan, Sharma said on Sunday, the party held the ‘Mehangai Par Halla Bol’ rally in Delhi to highlight the government’s complete failure to rein in price rise and the demand that PM Modi take immediate action to protect citizens’ welfare.
“With the Bharat Jodo Yatra starting on September 7, we are taking the next step to begin a direct dialogue with the people of India on the serious issues confronting the country. We will cover 3,500 km from Kanyakumari to Kashmir in 150 days and interact with lakhs of people across the country”, she said.
Citing the reason for launching the Yatra, Sharma said in 2014, PM Modi had offered a dream of prosperity to all Indians. Instead, he has delivered a nightmare of price rise, unemployment, social tension and compromised institutions over the past eight years.
The economy is in tatters. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. Common people are badly hurt
by relentless price rise and record unemployment. Kisans and Khet mazdoors are buried under debt. The assets of
our country built up over the past 70 years are being handed over to Modiji’s billionaire crony-capitalist friends”, she said.
According to the AICC leader, the voice of the people is being suppressed and constitutional rights are being crushed while systematic efforts are being made to subvert the Constitution, dismantle institutions and hollow out democracy.
She said the Congress will connect with social activists, intellectuals, other political parties and lakhs of ordinary people to begin a conversation on how to tackle the grevious challenges.
“We have to speak so louldy that this deaf government can hear our voices”, she said.
Sharma reminded that the government’s role is to maintain peace, maintain law and order, and give trust to the people of the country so that they can live peacefully adding it is not the government’s role to create discontent, discord enmity among the people.
“Is this the kind of government we want who creates enmity among the people, who’s spokesperson speaks out of turn, who’s leaders speak out of turn and they are not taking to task for creating discontent enmity between people. Have you seen anybody being behind bars for speaking out of turn, no. We want a country, our children and the younger generation can think about development, how to grow and take the country forward and not be engaged in religion and these kinds of discord that affect social tensions,” she further asserted
