Pressure groups take out rally for ILP, other demands despite prohibitory order

Shillong,Nov 1: The pressure groups under the banner ‘Save Hynniewptrep Mission’ took out a rally on Tuesday for the fulfillment of various demands, including ILP .

The groups comprising Hynniewptrep Youth Council (HYC), Jaintia Students Movement (JSM),  Hynniewptrep Achik National Movement (HANM), East Jaintia National Council (EJNC) and Confederation of Ri Bhoi People ( CoRP) staged the rally defying the prohibitory order of the East Khasi Hills district administration.

The rallyists, holding flags and with the accompaniment of drum beats, demanded implementation of ILP and highlighted other issues.

“North, East, South, West , ILP is the best , no ILP,  no rest”, said the slogans of the pressure groups.

Besides the ILP, the demands of the groups include the immediate relocation of the Harijan Colony from Them Iew Mawlong,  review of the MoU signed under the first phase of border talks with Assam, need to punish the police officials involved in the killing of ex-HNLC leader Cherishstarfield Thangkhiew, action against people involved in various scandals under Saubhagya and smart meter projects besides rice scam, resolving unemployment crisis, reviewing the office memorandum on job recruitment at the district level and repealing of the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act (MRGA), 2021.

The HYC general secretary Roy Kupar Synrem said though these issues were raised with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, during the meeting with them ,they conveyed that these will have to be addressed by the political department.

Hw warned of surprise agitations in the days to come.

On section 144 CrPC 

To a question whether the groups defied section 144 CrPC issued by the deputy commissioner, Synrem said it was after the statement of deputy chief minister that the aggrieved NGOs can meet him, the members wanted to go to the secretariat to meet him.

He also termed as unprecedented the stand of the government that visitors have to take permission from the deputy commissioner to meet ministers.
