
Shillong, Sept 20: Governor CH Vijayashankar has asked the religious leaders of the state to address drug abuse, HIV-AIDS, TB and cancer cases affecting the youths.
Addressing the 32nd All Faith- All Religion “Get-Together of Harmony” organised by the Central Puja Committee (CPC), the governor expressed concern over the rising social challenges facing Meghalaya, particularly the increasing cases of drug abuse, tuberculosis (TB), HIV, and cancer among the youth and vulnerable sections of society.
He pointed out that there are some HIV-AIDS affected youths who are also suffering from TB.
He termed the trend as dangerous and alarming, urging faith-based organisations, civil society groups, and community leaders to work hand in hand with the government to spread awareness, strengthen preventive measures, and provide timely support to affected individuals. He said the youth, who are the future of the state, must be protected from these challenges and empowered with education, opportunities, and positive values to become responsible citizens.
The event was held n collaboration with the Ramakrishna Mission Shillong, at the Ramakrishna Mission Puja Mandap Hall, Laitumkhrah.
The governor highlighted the CPC’s humanitarian contributions, including relief during natural calamities, medical assistance to the poor, and extensive support during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vijayashankar also lauded the Central Puja Committee’s role since its inception in 1992, not only as an umbrella body of Puja Committees and Mandirs in Meghalaya but also as a platform promoting social service, harmony, and interfaith dialogue.
Reflecting on the spirit of Durga Puja, the governor said, “Durga Puja is a celebration of the triumph of good over evil, of virtue over deceit, and of collective harmony over selfishness. It is an opportunity to purify our hearts, strengthen our bonds as a community, and renew our pledge to live in peace and brotherhood.”
Extending his warm greetings, he added, “May the blessings of Maa Durga bring peace, prosperity, and happiness to all.
Youth leader Dr. Alisha Marba Rani addressed the gathering on the theme “Role of youth from different faiths in strengthening the harmony bond in an inclusive manner,” followed by cultural presentations by Mahila Samity of CPC Meghalaya.
One of the highlights of the event was the All Faith Prayer, where leaders representing various faiths came together with the Governor, symbolizing the spirit of unity, brotherhood, and harmony.
The programme was also attended by Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Shillong, Swami Hitakamanandaji Maharaj, President CPC, Meghalaya Naba Bhattacharjee, and members of various Puja Committees of Shillong, among others.
