Tibetan struggle is for justice: Geshe Lhakdor

Tibetan guru talks about the journey of struggle, says days of Chinese oppression are numbered

Geshe Lhakdor la, one of the prominent names in the Tibetan spiritual and intellectual community, was in Shillong last week to address a young audience at U Soso Tham auditorium. He spoke about ‘Social, Emotional and Ethical Learning’. The day after, he visited the monastery at Lumparing to address the Tibetan community in the city.

Born in West Tibet’s Yakra in 1956, Geshe Lhakdor left his country in 1962 and came to India. He was a translator and research assistant at the Cultural Centre of His Holiness The Dalai Lama in New Delhi between 1986 and 1989. He has also co-translated several books by the Dalai Lama.

Geshe Lhakdor speaks about life and living. His speeches encompass philosophy and spirituality, and yet, they are without the burden of solemn ideas and grim religious innuendos. He touches every heart, makes his audience laugh and think at the same time, and creates a connection with every listener to his speech.

Sunday Monitor met the guru at the Lumparing monastery to know not about his spiritual journey but the harsher realities of the Tibetan politics and the struggle of the Tibetans for freedom. Geshe Lhakdor spoke about the future of the struggles, why autonomy over full freedom from China’s political high-handedness and the Tibetans in India.
