Shillong, Nov 26: Cabinet has approved the proposed settlement of GAD land under the Tura town area.
According to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, for decades, many government lands and office areas were encroached upon, leading to court cases, eviction notices, and frequent law-and-order concerns. Following the same policy adopted in Williamnagar two to three years ago, the cabinet has now cleared GAD’s proposal to settle these encroachments through long-term leases.
Under this decision, the land will remain government revenue land but will be leased to the households currently residing there, based on defined criteria. This aims to prevent future disputes and ensure clarity for both the government and the public.l
The first phase will cover localities that have agreed to the process, where surveys, drone mapping, digital maps, and public hearings have already been completed over the past two years. Localities that have not yet agreed will be engaged in the second phase, and no area will be forced into the settlement.
This marks an important step for orderly development in Tura Town.
