Sohphlang Festival concludes 

Shillong,Dec 7: The annual Sohphlang  Festival, organised by the Mawkynrew Sohphlang Indigenous Eco Cultural Society, was held on December 5 & 6 at Jongksha–Lad Kharang.

The event drew many visitors who came to experience the rich cultural heritage and traditional flavours of the Mawkynrew region.

The festival featured numerous cultural performances, including skits and traditional musical presentations by various local groups. The stage came alive with performances by the Nongtem Ieid Lariti of Mawjatap, the Syntung musical troupe, Lanora Band, the well-known group Na U Bnai, and the Trinity Voices—each showcasing the beauty and depth of indigenous music and talent.

The organisers also provided a platform for the youth of the area to exhibit their traditional attire through the Farmers Dress Show, highlighting the unique clothing styles worn by farmers across the region.

Nine participants competed in the Miss Sohphlang and Farmers Dress Show 2025 competition.

Three winners were selected, and they are

Jessica Nongpluh – second runner-up, awarded Rs 10,000

Fatima Mukhim – first runner-up, awarded Rs 15,000

Rosina Mylliem– Winner of Miss Farmers Show 2025, awarded Rs 20,000 and a certificate

Awards were presented by the Sardar of Jongksha village, Olet Kharsohnoh, and Wainbha Nongrum, leader of the Sur U Nongkyndong organisation.

A festival growing in strength

What began as a small local initiative has now grown into a major cultural event that attracts visitors not only from within Meghalaya but also from neighbouring states. Farmers greatly benefited from the opportunity to sell their produce directly to visitors without having to pay any fees to the society, a valuable support system for the farming community.

Speaking at the event, the Advisor of the Society, Carmel Lyngdoh, expressed thanked the state government for its continued support in organising the festival.

Nongrum also lauded the Sohphlang Society for bringing the festival to the Mawkynrew Block and for opening doors for the people of the region to appreciate the cultural wealth and the hard work of the local farming community.
