Govt for more discussions to regulate land holding system

Shillong, Feb 17: The state government is in favour of more discussions on streamlining the land holding system.
In reply to a discussion on special motion initiated by Ardent Basaiawmoit (VPP), Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said on Tuesday that the need of the hour is how to streamline the land-holding system, land-transfer system, and how to synergise between the Benami Act, the Land Transfer Act, and others so that most stringent law could be made to prevent alienation of land which is illegal.

He said most of the land in the state is not registered.

Moreover, cadastral survey is yet to be implemented.

According to the minister, the revenue department is dealing only with the government land and allocation of government land  which is done as per the process of the law.

The department is also dealing with the transfer of land between the tribals and the non-tribals, he said, adding that this is also done only after fulfilling all the necessary provisions of the law.

Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma wanted the government to prevent alienation and illegal occupation of land in Assam-Meghalaya border especially Jorabad and Byrnihat areas of Ri Bhoi.
