Lady Keane College observes World Hearing Day

Shillong, March 3: Lady Keane College observed World Hearing Day on Tuesday by holding an awareness event and screening camp.

The event was jointly organised by the Cell for Persons with Disabilities, Lady Keane College, Shillong, in collaboration with the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness under the National Health Mission, Government of Meghalaya.

The United Nations has set forth the theme for World Hearing Day, ‘From Communities to Classrooms: Hearing care for every child.

Dr Howni Wothi Laloo, Senior Resident, Department of ENT, Shillong Medical College and State Nodal Officer, National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness, (NPPCF) Department of Health and Family Welfare cautioned the students, who are a vulnerable group exposed to loud decibels of sound specially those listening to music on head phones, attending concerts, loud parties and jam sessions, and blasting music in confined spaces such as vehicles. Improper cleaning of the ear results in infections and puncturing of the eardrum.

Dr. Laloo created awareness among the students and the staff of the college on the importance of ear health and measures to prevent hearing loss.

After the screening camp, cases requiring further investigation and treatment would be referred to Civil Hospital Shillong.

College Principal Anjalee M Shangpliang also spoke on the occasion.
