
Shillong, March 10: The Ministry of Home Affairs has rushed in one company of Rapid Action Force and three companies of Central Armed Police Force to tackle the law and order situation in Garo Hills.
The move follows violent incident incidents in West Garo Hills, including the death of two residents, arson and assaults
A religious place was also vandalised by miscreants.
Commissioner & Secretary in-charge home and district council affairs (DCA) Cyril Diengdoh said after the issue was taken up with Delhi, the additional forces were sent from Assam.
Earlier, the district administration imposed a two‑day curfew on March 11 and 12 to prevent further violence.
He said the army carried out flag marches in the afternoon and evening in Chibinang, Rajabala, Tikrikilla and Phulbari to restore normalcy.
Earlier, the law and issue in the form of a PIL was taken up by the High Court of Meghalaya.
The petitioner sought a direction to
provide adequate security to the non-tribal candidates coming for
filing their nomination for MDC election or in the alternative a direction to change the place of accepting nomination papers to their respective blocks.
Senior Counsel K Paul stated that some
incidents had taken place when non-tribal candidates had gone to file their nomination forms. He submitted that there was violence in the area and some firing incident had also taken place, in which three people were reportedly dead. He further submitted hat in the
incident, several people were injured.
Advocate General Amit Kumar stated that the state will ensure that no untoward incident takes place in the area
and that additional manpower will be deployed, if not already
deployed and that the state will take all such steps as are required.
He assured that steps will be taken to
ensure that no further incidents take place.
The matter will be taken up on March 17.
