Shillong, July 23: The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Thursday questioned why the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is silent on protests by students, including those from Delhi.
In a statement, VPP spokesperson Dr Airpiece W. Rani extended. support to the agitating students.

Several youths from Meghalaya are part of the protests, and at a time when they are facing action, people expect the Chief Minister and the government to speak up.
“Instead, the state government has chosen to remain silent. Does this mean the government does not care about the youth and their future? Does it mean the government has no concern about the alleged irregularities? Or has the government of Meghalaya become a puppet in the hands of the Centre?” he asked.
The VPP leader criticised police action against demonstrators in the national capital.
He connected the Delhi agitation to concerns being raised in Meghalaya.
Thee VPP too has been demanding that institutions delivering public services be kept free of political pressure, he said.
Later, VPP North Shillong legislator Adelbert Nongrum joined a public solidarity meeting organised by the Hynniewtrep Youth Council at Khyndailad.
He extended support to the Jantar Mantar student protest demanding accountability for the NEET paper leak and alleged police excesses.
Nongrum told reporters that he was present not in his capacity as an MLA alone, but as a citizen worried about the future of young people.
“I have come here not just as an MLA, but as a citizen who is concerned about what is happening, especially on an issue that affects the future of our youth. Because once we lose faith, where will we find hope?” he said.
