DC rules out internet ban, curfew following law and order situation

KSU leaders in judicial custody for 14 days

Shillong, Aug 20: The East Khasi Hills District administration on Thursday ruled out ban on internet or imposition of curfew following the violent incidents on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday (Aug 20), the deputy commissioner Abhilash Baranwal said that the situation does not warrant other extreme  measures.

Five companies of central forces have been deployed to ensure law and order.

The DC said permission was sought by the Khasi Students’ Union through letters  on August 12 and August 17 for organising a bike rally. Permission was granted on  August 18 along with terms and conditions.

The bike rally started from the office of the Khasi Students’ Union Jaiaw at 4 pm along the route as specified in the permission. During the course of the bike rally, pillion riders damaged and vandalized 31 government and private vehicles and nine individuals were assaulted in different locations along the route of the rally in Laitumkhrah and Mawlai. It was also reported that the statues of Subhash Chandra Bose and Swami Vivekananda at R & R Colony were vandalised.

Three top KSU leaders were arrested following the incident and they were forwarded to judicial custody for 14 days.
