BJP wants to know nature of emergency to extend councils

Shillong, Feb 3: The state BJP sought an answer from the government for extending the term of KHADC and JHADC for six months.

BJP chief spokesperson M Kharkrang told reporters on Saturday that the government should have valid reasons for extending the term of the councils.

“The government will have to spell out what is the emergency situation or exigencies that warrant the extension of the term of the two ADCs,” he said.

“You cannot extend the term of the council on flimsy grounds. There has to be some valid reasons. Therefore, we leave it to the government to come clear on that,” Kharkrang said.

The cabinet approved the proposal to extend the term of the two ADCs after the delimitation committees had sought for more time to complete the exercise.

To a query,  Kharkrang said, “If the government feels that we have reached an emergency situation where we have to finish off this delimitation exercise before we start the new election, then now the government will have to come clear on what is the emergency in that.”
