Shillong, April 5: The BSF has seized betel nuts and sarees on Tuesday in East Jaintia Hills.
In a statement on Wednesday, the BSF said acting on specific tip-off, the troops of 172 Bn BSF Meghalaya seized a truck carrying huge quantity of processed betel nuts worth rupees 1.12 crore from Umkiang area of East Jaintia Hills.
The apprehended driver revealed that the consignment of betel nuts originated from Myanmar and was being taken to Barpeta from Silchar, Assam.
An FIR was lodged in the case and accused driver along with seized items were handed over to Umkiang police station.
This is the third consecutive seizure of huge quantity of betel nuts from the same area.
In another operation, the troops of 4 Bn BSF Meghalaya seized clothings (sarees) worth more than Rs 13 lakh from the bordering area of Muktapur West Jaintia Hills, which were meant for smuggling into Bangladesh. The seized items were handed over to customs office in Dawki..
