Clash in Assam-Meghalaya border over MeECL line

Shillong, July 26: Tension erupted at Kylling–Iongkhuli area in Assam-Meghalaya border on Monday morning over the use of electricity line set up by Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).

When contacted, the MDC, Victor Ranee, said that from the people of the area, he came to know that this was related to MeECL line.

“I am at the KHADC here but the people from there told me that the residents had earlier used Assam electricity line but with the initiative of local MLA, the line was shifted and people are now using MeECL line but Assam objected and hence the problem”, Ranee said.

There are media reports that Assam police tried to pull down the MeECL poles following which a clash erupted and the Mawhati MDC Charles Marngar was assaulted.

Earlier, Congress MLA, Ampareen Lyngdoh said that a lady from the area called her a few hours back informing that Assam police personnel in three buses have stormed the village.

“The lady wanted me to inform the police headquarters”, Ampareen said adding that the woman may be finding it difficult to get through to anyone.

The incident comes at a time when Assam and Meghalaya chief ministers have stressed the need of going beyond the status quo in the border during their meeting held in Shillong on July 23.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma then had assured that development works should not be affected in the border.
