An official said that at 11 am, a meeting was held with the headmen and the secretaries of Lapangap and Tapat village, facilitated by the district administrations of both the West Jaintia Hills and the West Karbi Hills.

The meeting was held in coordial manner but remained inconclusive.

In the meeting, the  Karbi side accepted the ownership of paddy fields by Lapangap farmers.

However, they claimed tree plantations on hills surrounded by paddy fields.

Lapangap farmers agreed in principle for a joint cultivation of seasonal crops on hillocks in the spirit of peaceful coexistence. They pointed out that the violation of the agreement by way of cutting trees, bamboo or engaging in cultivation would complicate the border resolution.

Karbis demanded that the hills should be given to them for cultivation, thereby leading to the breakdown in negotiations.

In the ensuing confrontation, after the meeting, one person was injured. He is from West Jaintia Hills.

The farming activities are yet to resume due to the stand-off.
