Conrad wants Assam CM to initiate probe into death of GH resident in Goalpara rehabilitation centre

Shillong, July 9: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has written to his Assam counterpart to initiate a probe into the death of Niksamseng Ch Marak at a rehabilitation centre in Goalpara.

‘I am writing to bring to your attention a disturbing incident that requires immediate investigation and action. That a resident of my state, (L) Niksamseng Ch Marak, was arrested by Assam police on July 2 and was sent to a rehabilitation centre in Goalpara Assam. However, two days later, he was found dead in the rehab centre – “New Life Foundation Centre, Nayapara, Goalpara”, under suspicious circumstances. As informed by his family, the centre’s authorities initially claimed it was a suicide, but later changed their statement, raising serious concerns about the turn of events. I have been informed that the body bore severe injury marks, including, deep knife cut injury on the left side of his face, burns, severe injury marks on the chin, hips, and legs. These prima facie injuries suggest that Niksamseng was subjected to brutal torture, beating, and stabbing inside the rehab centre”, Conrad said in the letter.

“The family has lodged and FIR into the incident, your kind intervention to investigate the matter by constituting an enquiry will be highly appreciated”, the chief minister added.
