Crowborough (Vivanta) opening postponed

Courtyard Marriott in Jail road nearing completion

Shillong, Sept 5: With some more works pending, the opening of Vivanta hotel ( Crowborough), Khyndaiad has been postponed.

During a visit to the upcoming hotel on Monday, the workers were seen engaged in hectic construction activities.

Earlier, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had announced about its opening on September 7.

A functionary of Aura Hotels and Resorts Private Limited , which is entrusted to construct the hotel, said though the opening was scheduled on September 7, it was postponed.

Once completed, Taj Vivanta will run the hotel.

“We are hopeful of completing the work within this month. The state government wants to invite the President of India to open other important projects along with this hotel”, he said.

The five star hotel with a ground floor, parking space and five more floors, has 101 rooms.

Atleast 250 workers are engaged in theĀ  construction of the hotel formerly known as Crowborough which has been pending since 1987 due to legal issues till the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) took over and decided to go for a public-private partnership. Covid-19 had further delayed the project.

Not far from Khyndaiad, Courtyard Marriott is under construction in Jail road and it will be completely managed by Marriott unlike Crowborough.

The project manager of Maxim Infrastructure and Real Estate Private Limited said that 95 per cent work has been completed.

He said the deadline to complete the project is October.

Once the Maxim Infrastructure completes the work , it will be run by Marriott.

The five star hotel in the category of G plus 6 ( ground floor and six more floors) has 182 rooms with king,queen, excutive and presidential suites besides family rooms.

The parking space can accommodate 250 vehicles. Once completed, the hotel is expected to provide employment to atleast 1,000 persons.
