East Bengal to play ISL Season 8 after Mamata’s intervention

Kolkata, August 25 (UNI): East Bengal will play India’s top tier football championship ISL Season 8 after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee mediated with the title sponsor Shree Cement and the century-old club at Nabanna on Wednesday.

The club was having some disputes with the industrialist sponsor since October 2020 and its participation was hanging in the balance, which finally tilted into the win-win situation after Banerjee mediated between the two contesting parties.

“We will participate in the ISL,” Shree Cement officials confirmed East Bengal’s participation in Season 8.

East Bengal representatives, who took part in the talks, said they would sign the final agreement of their joint venture with investor Shree Cement. “We are eager to play. There were some differences so we could not sign the agreement. But since you (Mamata Banerjee) have requested, we have decided that we will participate in ISL,” said Shree Cement management official SS Khandelwal.

East Bengal official Debabrata Sarkar said, “The CM has guided us to play in ISL this season. We also thank Shree Cement officials for their support to the club. The Kolkata giants had a woeful year in ISL Season 7.”
